Our mission

United Voices of Literacy (UVOLI) – Uniting Voices through Literacy Education
UVOLI advances student success by providing high-impact, out-of-school programs that strengthen literacy, confidence, and leadership. Through our Readers are Leaders program, students improve reading and comprehension using film-based storytelling and dramatic reading techniques.

Opportunities

"Enchant Young Minds: Engage young readers in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter"

✨ Love movies, storytelling, and a little bit of magic?
This fall, step into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter while helping a child discover the real magic of reading!

United Voices of Literacy (UVOLI), in partnership with El Nido Family Centers, invites you to volunteer in our Readers Are Leaders virtual program—where literacy meets imagination. This isn’t plain tutoring. It’s theater. It’s mentorship. It’s unlocking a world of wonder.

📚 As a Literacy Reading Coach, you’ll:

  • Bring Harry Potter to life through dramatic reading and reader’s theater.
  • Guide students (grades 3–7, reading below grade level) to grow in confidence, comprehension, and joy for reading.
  • Take part in a final virtual showcase on October 18, 2025—a magical performance where both students and you shine before a live audience!

We cover fingerprinting and DOJ background checks—all you need to bring is your creativity, enthusiasm, and love of stories. Together, we’ll turn reading into an adventure and help young readers light up with confidence and imagination.

✨ Don’t just tutor. Be part of the magic. ✨

Mentor - Unlock The Play and Excitement of Reading Productions

Reading is the foundation for everything.
For students who struggle, reading can feel like an uphill battle. Come along on a journey and make reading a playful, expressive journey.  You can assist us by becoming a Literacy Coach for reading.  Get involved with the Reading Productions.  Accompany a student at a Public Community Reading. Put on your Santa Hat and enchant kids with holiday stories, songs and sweet treats. If you are a writer, help us turn more books and movies into reading scripts for our readers. Unlock the door of imagination and creativity for students who are eager to improve reading, and eager to know what sparks your interest.

Because when a child learns to read, they start writing their own story.

Items we need

Books needed for students

We are always seeking books for children and tweens, ages 7-13.  Cultural books where the central characters are Latino or African American are of interest to the students that we serve.  Inspiration comes when you can see and read about characters that look like and represent you. Our students also love chapter books, astronauts, female leaders, sports figures, and super hero’s.   We are also seeking as many books as possible go provide to students at Christmas where we read holiday stories and provide sweet treats to kids and their families.

How you help

Step into a world where stories come alive—and help a student do the same! As a UVOLI volunteer, you’ll work one-on-one virtually and in small classroom settings to guide students through film-based reading texts. Whether it’s becoming magical with Harry Potter, embodying a brave hero from Black Panther, or taking on the voice of a talking animal in Dolittle and the Animals, you’ll help students bring stories to life.

Remember the teacher who changed your life? Now, you can be that person.

In just five weeks, you’ll witness hesitant readers transform into confident, expressive voices, discovering the joy, rhythm, and pride of storytelling. Every session is an opportunity to inspire, guide, and spark a lifelong love of reading.

✨ Join us and be the spark that lights a reader’s imagination.

About us

At United Voices of Literacy, Inc. (UVOLI), we’re an LA-based, volunteer-powered organization on a mission to ignite the love of reading and storytelling. We believe that books are more than words on a page—they’re keys to imagination, confidence, and endless possibility.

Our passionate team works with students who may be reluctant readers, guiding them through literacy coaching, mentorship, and dynamic storytelling workshops that make reading come alive. With every story, every dramatic reading, and every moment of creativity, we help young readers discover their voices, embrace their imagination, and grow into confident leaders.

At UVOLI, learning is magical, fun, and transformative. We break down barriers to literacy, provide a safe space for exploration, and inspire students to dream big—all while sharing the joy and power of reading.
