Our robust programming includes a community-wide youth sports league called the South Central Sports League (SCSL).

The South Central Sports League (SCSL) provides FREE athletics programming for both APCH youth members and youth from the greater South Central community. Check out the SCSL website here.

The mission of the South Central Sports League is to provide a safe and accessible environment where young athletes of the South Central community develop technical, tactical, physical, and mental components of their game to reach the next stage in their sports journey.

• Volunteer Role Overview: Volunteers will support the game-day facilitation roles of the South Central Sports League. Responsibilities will include equipment and space setup and breakdown, team/player check-in, scorekeeping, clock running and/or other roles as needed. The APCH SCSL Program team will provide guidance for volunteers.
• Required Skills/Experience:

• All volunteers must complete a volunteer waiver (provided to volunteers upon confirmation for this project) prior to volunteering at APCH
• Age: high school junior or older
• Bilingual English-Spanish preferred, but not required
• Strong communication, problem-solving and customer service
• Experience working with youth and group management is highly preferred and appreciated
• Ability to work within an active, potentially noisy environment, and to foster a welcoming, safe, nurturing atmosphere is required

• Please Note: Role may include moving, bending, walking, medium-light lifting and extended periods of standing. Please let the APCH team know if there is anything we can do to make this project more comfortable for you.

• Volunteer Role Overview: APCH is seeking a committed, patient volunteer to provide homework help for APCH elementary and middle-school-aged youth members in a study space focused on providing academic support for all school subjects including science, mathematics, English and social science.

• Required Skills/Experience:

• Age 18 years or older or post high school required; Age 21+ preferred
• Middle-school-level subject mastery of one or more of the following subject areas to guide elementary and/or middle school students: science, mathematics, English, social science
• Experience working with youth is highly preferred and appreciated
• Experience providing tutoring support or working in a classroom setting is preferred, but not required
• Motivated spirit
• Ability to take initiative and lead with positivity, motivation and patience
• Ability to work within an active, potentially noisy environment and to foster a welcoming, safe, nurturing atmosphere is required

  • Placement: Individual must be able to fill an available volunteer role, uphold the role’s responsibilities and adhere to the role’s schedule OR be willing to wait until a volunteer role that is well-suited for the individual becomes available
    • PLEASE NOTE: Some volunteer roles require an individual to have a specific skill or knowledge set to carry out responsibilities necessary within the APCH program or department the role supports
    • PLEASE NOTE: APCH fills volunteer roles on a first-come, first-served basis
  • Orientation/Training: Individual must attend an APCH volunteer welcome/orientation session, which includes a mandated reporting review and an APCH member engagement training
    • Mandated Reporter Training, Exam & Certification:

• Volunteer Role Overview: APCH is seeking a committed, caring volunteer to help provide supervision for APCH youth members in our “Chill Room” (a calm space dedicated to members’ emotional and sensory well-being, and designed to provide a supportive environment to help members relax, take a break, decompress and recharge) and/or our “Family Room” (an indoor communal space where youth members enjoy free time, meal and snack time and indoor activities during rainy days). The Chill Room/Family Room volunteer will:

• Ensure member safety by monitoring the room and its occupants to create a safe, welcoming environment for all APCH youth
• Be attentive to any potential conflicts, unsafe behavior or emergencies, and respond accordingly if needed
• Uphold APCH agency policies
• Actively ensure all members adhere to organizational rules, including behavior expectations and respect for others
• Encourage positive interactions
• Foster a sense of belonging by encouraging respectful communication and promoting constructive engagement among members
• Provide a consistent presence
• Serve as a reliable adult role model by maintaining a calm, approachable demeanor and being available for guidance or support if needed
• Report and communicate issues, and inform staff promptly of any incidents or concerns – such as rule violations, safety hazards or member well-being issues – to ensure proper follow-up

• Required Skills/Experience:

• Age 18 years or older AND post high school required; Age 21+ preferred
• Bilingual English-Spanish preferred, but not required
• Strong communication, problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
• Experience and comfortability working with youth (ages 8-18) and an understanding of the developmental needs of youth

Project: A Place Called Home “Family Resource Depot” Grocery Sorting & Packing

A Place Called Home (APCH) “Family Resource Depot” Overview: A Place Called Home has served South Central youth and families with its life-changing programs for more than 30 years.

In 2020, in the face of the COVID-19 emergency, APCH quickly mobilized to respond to the urgent and ongoing needs of youth and families in our community who were already struggling with poverty and food insecurity.

APCH launched the Family Resource Depot, or “FRD”, to provide groceries, hygiene products and other household necessities to our families in need on a weekly basis.

In the years since, APCH has remained committed to continuing to provide fresh produce and other essentials for families within our community who are experiencing food and financial insecurity.

APCH currently provides 100-200 bags of groceries per week for families in need through our FRD initiative.

This is where our wonderful APCH volunteers come in!

Project Description:Volunteers sort and pack fresh produce and dry/canned food to create grocery bags for families from the APCH community. The APCH team guides volunteers throughout the project. APCH distributes the completed grocery bags to APCH families the evening after the packing project.

Please Note: This is an active project that may include light-heavy lifting, bending and extended periods of standing. Please let the APCH team know if there is anything we can do to make the project more comfortable for you.

“M.A.S.” Volunteer – “Making A Spark” and giving más or more — an individual supporting an APCH program or department on a weekly basis for at least one year.

Volunteer Mentor – an individual committed to supporting, guiding, and caring for an APCH teen/young adult member (age 13 to early 20s) via APCH’s L.I.F.E. (Lead, Inspire, Foster, and Empower) Mentoring Program.

Volunteer Intern – an individual supporting an APCH program or department on a weekly basis for at least one APCH semester — spring, summer or fall — while receiving school/class credit for their volunteer internship hours.

Weekly Volunteer – an individual supporting an APCH program or department on a weekly basis for at least one APCH semester — spring, summer or fall.

APCH Cares Volunteer – APCH members, families, alumni and staff providing service to make a positive difference in our community and the world.

Volunteer Member of APCH’s Board of Directors, Leadership Council or Social Change Club – an individual serving as a member of one of APCH’s volunteer leadership entities.

One-Time Volunteer – an individual or a group providing support for an APCH project, event or initiative — great for corporate groups, school groups, families, faith communities, social clubs and more.
