Our mission

To fight for the health of the region’s waterways, and for sustainable, equitable and climate-friendly water supplies. We envision the Los Angeles region as an international leader on integrated, sustainable and equitable water management; a region that is water self-sufficient, and where all waterways throughout the county are safe, healthy and accessible to the public.

Opportunities

Creeks 2 Coast Cleanup Challenge

Los Angeles County is expansive, with a healthy mix of beautiful beaches, bays, parks, and open spaces throughout its 4,751 sq miles. Yet, despite the ecologic ecological and community importance, we continue to find litter creating adverse impacts. But you can help- join the Creeks 2 Coast Challenge (C2C Challenge) and make an impact in our greater Los Angeles community!

The C2C Challenge is a decentralized cleanup program. It allows participants to engage in cleanups from a distance – without sacrificing our impact or scientific integrity. Participants pick FOUR sites from the categories of their choice; challenge sites are categorized into four groups: Coastal, River & Creeks, Metropolitan Parks, and Trails. You’ll have a year to complete the six cleanups, and become a Cleanup Champion!

River Assessment Field Team (RAFT)

View our 2024 RAFT Report

Join our River Assessment Field Team (RAFT) to cleanup and collect data that can help inform decisions about future LA River Restoration.

RAFT is our community science program where volunteers explore the LA River, while learning about its history and the challenges facing the river. Volunteers collect valuable scientific data through water sampling, use iNaturalist to measure biodiversity, as well as cleanup and document plastic and other waste using Litterati.

The RAFT program is key for gathering important data on our waterways and making scientific information more accessible to all members of our community.

How you help

We rely on volunteers from across LA County to help us safeguard the Marine Protected Areas off our coast, combat stormwater and plastic pollution in our neighborhoods, and monitor the health of our rivers and creeks

About us

For more than three decades, Los Angeles Waterkeeper (LA Waterkeeper) has served as LA’s water watchdog, safeguarding our inland and coastal waters using the law, science and community action. We work to eliminate pollution, achieve ecosystem health for our waterways and secure a resilient, multi-benefit, low-carbon water supply to the region.

Through our relentless advocacy, the Los Angeles region is poised to invest more than $20 billion in our water infrastructure over the next two decades. It is up to us to ensure that our investments are spent wisely—implementing multi-benefit stormwater capture projects, enhancing wastewater recycling efforts, cleaning up our contaminated groundwater and ensuring LA River restoration maximizes ecological health while safeguarding local communities.
