Walk/Jog/Run with People Overcoming Addiction

Use your passion for exercise and your friendly personality to support people on their journey to long-term sobriety. As a Strides in Recovery assistant coach / mentor, you will walk, jog or run with small groups of the newly sober who are receiving care at a Southern California addiction treatment program.

You will be a role model of fun in sobriety and healthy lifestyle.  You will build relationships.  You will lift others. You will be supporting sobriety, one stride at a time.

FAQs about being an Assistant Coach

Do I need to be a serious runner?

It depends. Each team is different.  Some primarily walk, some do a mix of walking and running, and others are comprised primarily of runners. Distances vary, depending on the goals of group (e.g., enjoy a walk, train for a half marathon, do something in between.) Additional information is provided for each opportunity, so you can find what works best for you.

How long is each session?

A typical session lasts 60 or 90 minutes.

What is the format for a typical session?

When you arrive, you will be greeted by the head coach and mingle with participants as they are gathering. The session will formally begin with a short talk about exercise and addiction recovery, followed by a warm-up.  Every team member will then walk, jog or run at their own pace along the designated route. You will be right there at their side, creating a positive atmosphere through your kind words and active listening.

How do I know what to talk about?

That’s covered during training. In short, be yourself.

How you help

Today, Strides in Recovery coaches and volunteers bring the healing power of exercise to addiction treatment programs throughout Southern California. Together we are growing physically, emotionally, and mentally stronger. Together we are supporting sobriety, one stride at a time.

About us

Not that everyone needs to run a marathon, but everyone battling addiction should have the opportunity to learn that regular exercise is physically, mentally, and emotionally healing. And, training toward a challenging goal with the support of their sober community, provides even more benefits. Through our goal-oriented group running and walking programs, we promote a body-mind-soul approach to recovery while reinforcing the life skills and mindset needed to support long term sobriety.
