Our mission

School on Wheels volunteers provide free tutoring & mentoring to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade living in shelters, motels, vehicles, group foster homes, and on the streets in Southern California. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with the highest level of education possible.

Opportunities

🌟 One hour a week makes a difference: Tutor a child experiencing homelessness!🌟

Are you looking for a meaningful way to spend your time and truly make an impact? At School on Wheels, our amazing volunteers meet one-on-one (in person or virtual) each week with students experiencing homelessness—offering them encouragement, academic support, and a reliable connection.

Here’s what you’ll bring:

  • A friendly, patient attitude and a willingness to listen
  • A bit of time each week (we’ll help you pick a schedule that works)
  • A desire to uplift someone who just needs you to show up

Here’s what your student will gain:

  • A steady mentor and friend during a time of uncertainty
  • Academic help tailored to their needs—reading, math, life skills
  • Hope and the belief that they can succeed

Why it matters: Because our most recent data show that two-thirds of students in our program improve by at least a grade level after 10 weeks of tutoring. That’s real progress.

🎉 Join us and become part of something incredible. No teaching certificate required—just your willingness to show up, support, and cheer someone on. Together we’ll unlock opportunity, build confidence, and open doors.

How you help

Volunteer tutors are our wheels—reaching students in six counties in Southern California and covering a span of 2,500 square miles. Becoming a volunteer tutor can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.

About us

School on Wheels was founded in 1993 by Agnes Stevens, a retired schoolteacher, who understood the importance of education to students devastated by homelessness – and the unique challenges they face. We were then, and we remain, the only organization in Southern California dedicated exclusively to the educational needs of this fragile population.
