Our mission The mission of Special Olympics Southern California is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Games Management Team

A Games Management Team (GMT) member is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the assigned functional area within the event. The GMT member may be responsible for training and leading a team of volunteers.

Team Volunteer

This position is for individuals that will assist Head Coach and Coaches with sports and non-sports training activities. Team Volunteer will not serve in any coaching capacity or provide sports training instruction to athletes. Ages 14+ may apply.

Coach/HeadCoach

This position is for individuals who want to assist Head Coaches or who want to lead a team of athletes through training and competition as a Head Coach. Special Olympics Southern California will provide sports training through our Coaches Education program for individuals interested in this position.

Young Athletes Prorgam Coordinator

This position is for individuals who want to help with the oversight of program administration, implementation, and events. Program Coordinators assist with the recruitment of Young Athletes and Coaches. Special Olympics Southern California will provide training for individuals interested in this position. Program Coordinators are appointed by the Region/Area.

Young Athletes Coach/Head Coach

This position is for individuals that will assist Head Coach and Program Coordinator with the execution of Young Athletes lessons and activities. It is an 8 week program. Assistant Coach will help create and maintain a positive and fun environment for participants. Head coaches are responsible for maintaining equipment, volunteer management, and creating a fun and positive environment for participants. Knowledge and/or experience working with young children of all abilities is preferred. Ages 14+.

Photographer or Videographer/Editor

A photographer photographs Special Olympics athletes and events to help us highlight the movement. A Marketing Videographer/Editor works on special projects, shoots and edits videos including testimonials and athlete profiles. An Event Photographer/Videographer volunteer helps capture the special moments in lives of Special Olympics athletes during competitions and other special events.

GMS Data Entry volunteers assist the department personnel by performing heavy data entry support duties as required. Other administrative support duties may include filing office records and copying.

Event Fundraising Committee

A Sub Committee Leader plays a vital role in a fundraising event. The Sub Committee Leader is responsible for overseeing the committee leading up to and the day of the event. The Sub Committee Members are repsonsible for tasks administered by the Sub Committee Leader, attends mothly meetings and the day of the event.

Administrative Support Volunteer

Administrative Support volunteers assist the department personnel by performing administrative support duties as required including filing office records, data entry, copying, shredding of documents, answering phones and other duties depending on experience.

Fan Experience Coordinator

Fans make joy happen. For athletes who do not have family or a support system, Fans are the ones that help cheer them on to the finish line. Our Fan Experience Coordinators make sure that fans have the tools and energy needed to cheer on the athletes. We cannot do it alone. But, together, we can all experience one of the greatest moments in sports. So, step onto the podium with us and take your place on the team.

A Global Messenger Speech Coach assists a Global Messenger in writing and preparing for an inspiring and impactful mission focused message tailored to the audience they are speaking to. At least 1 year of experience in public speaking and/or presentations.

How you help Special Olympics Southern California would not exist today without the expertise, time, and enthusiasm of its volunteers. And they are giving and receiving more high fives and hugs than they can count.
