About this event

MLK Day in Compton will have the platoon on deck at the city’s Veterans of Foreign War’s Post (VFW) Post building out a new community computer lab along with showing off our artistic skills through some painting on the outside of the post. The Compton VFW Post for the last 35 years has been a gathering place for the city’s veterans and residents alike. At the height of some of the city’s darker days in the community the VFW maintained a reputation of being neutral territory among rival gangs and a weekly safe space for the community to be able to dine, dance and meet. Alongside distributing food, our platoon will be building out a new computer lab within the post that will provide a resource to the local veterans young and old as well as the community’s members as well. The goal of this computer lab is to provide a means of STEM related educational classes to the veterans of the area, the local youth and also to the greater community overtime. The painting being done will be touch-up work and potentially a mural being painted by a local veteran who has painted various pieces throughout the city of Los Angeles. More details to come but there will be work for everyone. Come out and celebrate the legacy of service championed by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X who truly saw the power and potential of city’s like COMPTON! For Questions contact me using contact information provided with a back up phone number for the platoon being 310-415-7624 (Call/Text) Presented by Raytheon Technologies and AmeriCorps.
