Weekend Wellness Food Distribution is a drive-through and walk-up meal distribution program hosted on the first Friday of every month. This program provides L.A. Harbor locals free food from Friday evening to Sunday evening since most schools, foodbanks, and pantries are closed on the weekends. Weekend Wellness was created to close that gap, to ensure that all families have enough food to keep them nourished throughout the weekend, and then some. In July of 2020, Mike Lansing, the Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor (BGCLAH) created Weekend Wellness specifically to assist those families already facing economic struggle and poverty, which had then been exacerbated by the Covid-19 health and economic crisis. What started as a grassroots operation serving roughly 250 families at two club sites has now tripled to serve 900 unique families each Friday at multiple dedicated BGCLAH sites. Initially, the program was intended to serve the families of BGCLAH Members, but due to great demand and outcry for food assistance, BGCLAH opened its service to the greater public. Weekend Wellness distributions take place at the Port of Los Angeles BGC (San Pedro), Wilmington BGC (Wilmington), Harbor Hills BGC (Lomita), and the Cheryl Green BGC (Harbor Gateway South).
